Meet Candy!

Candy has had a very sad beginning...
Candy and 2 other chihuahua moms and pups were taken from their owner due to neglect & filthy conditions.   The puppies were being kept in a box which was filled with cockroaches....that gives you an idea of how these precious kids were being cared for!

Candy only had one surviving pup, but has been helping the other mom with nursing duties.

Candy is coming to us in hopes of finding a loving home so she can start new and forget all the horrible things that have happened to her in the last few years.

She is a beautiful little girl and with some love and TLC, she will blossom into a wonderful companion.

Update from Candy's current foster home:

Candy is a sweet little girl. Though she is very shy, she warms up quickly and loves attention. She loves her belly rubbed and often rolls over so you can rub it. She's never too far from her people and will happily sit on your lap to be petted, but she's not pushy about it.

She's housebroken and sits quietly in her kennel during the day. She rarely barks and enjoys relaxing. She's very affectionate and loving, but is pretty stingy with her kisses. She gives some, but isn't a licker.

She gets along well with resident dogs in her foster home, but so far hasn't decided to join in playing with them. She will cuddle with them in bed, but doesn't seem into running around and playing.

Update 10/19:

It's been a few weeks and Candy has really come out of her shell! Check her out smiling in the new picture!

As you can probably tell from the pictures, Candy is pretty shy. While she was friendly from day one, she had her tail permanently tucked under her body for the first week at my house. Then it started...just a little tail wiggle. 3 weeks later, Candy is a new woman! Candy's tail is up and she is so playful. She initiates play with the other dogs and loves playing with me. She fetches her toys and plays tug of war. She even "dances" when I sing to her. She is so loving and is always near me, happy to have any attention I give her.

She is potty trained and is not kenneled anymore. She actually doesn't do the greatest in her kennel at night and insists on sleeping in bed. In typical chihuahua fashion, she burrows under the covers at the foot of the bed.

Is Candy good with cats? You bet! Check our her picture snoozing next to the house cat.  She is smaller than the cat and enjoing the warmth.

Candy takes a little while to get comfortable and just needs someone that is patient enough to give her that time. I'll admit, Candy is shy to strangers and different environments and does not connect with new people right away. However, get her at home and give her some time and she is so worth it. She's just a doll and we love having her around. It's been heartwarming to see her transformation and Candy will be a wonderful dog for anyone willing to give her a chance.

*The pet you are viewing is a rescued pet which is most often from an animal control facility and does not come with a pedigree. The breed(s) listed are our best guess and are in no way guaranteed. Sometimes the pets appear to be a particular breed(s) in the pictures we receive from our rescue partners and when they arrive we are surprised to see an entirely different breed(s) in person!  If you choose to DNA test your adopted pet, test results may vary from company to company and our breed guess may not be reflected in those results as it is just that, our best guess. It is with deep longing that we wish there was a breed called "cute" as we believe all of our dogs would fall under this new breed classification!

Completion of an Adoption Application via our website www.midwestanimalrescue.org is the best way to show your interest in an animal and is the first step in our adoption process.

*Animals who are not fully vaccinated and altered are not eligible for long distance adoption.

When you adopt a pet from Midwest Animal Rescue and Services, your adoption fee covers: Microchip and registration, Core Vaccines including Rabies, Distemper and bordetella, age appropriate heartworm testing or FeLV-FIV testing, sterilization, heartworm/flea-tick prevention and deworming while in foster care.

Adoption fees are non-negotiable and can be paid by cashier's check, money order or credit card. We do not accept personal checks.

Any issues that arise after adoption are the full responsibility of the adopter after the finalization of adoption. Adoption fees are only part of the expense of owning a pet, so we ask you to consider the costs for the life of the pet before adoption. We recommend pet insurance.
