Meet Luella! This is a special girl who was dealt a raw hand. Luella has multiple congeniteal heart defects that cannot be fixed by surgery. If you ask her, she is a happy dog who loves life and will live it to the fullest for whatever time she does have.
Her goofy antics will have you laughing every day. Luella enjoys going for walks, playing with other dogs, and playing with toys. Cats are too much like toys - so best not to tempt her! Due to her heart, she needs to be monitored during any physical activity. If she shows signs of needing a rest or break, she NEEDS to take that rest or break. She is on medication that needs to be administered every 12 hours and also a low sodium diet. That said - she does need daily exercise to stay fit and happy. She will have a shortened life-span but there is no way to tell how much time she does have left. Eventually this sweet girls heart will not be able to keep up with her. Happy update for the new year! Luella had her recheck and she is stable and doing well. As long as she stays healthy she does not need to return for a recheck for a year. She does need to maintain the same medications with no changes currently. Luella is fully house trained. She has never had an accident in our house. Luella has been going to obedience classes and has mastered all of the basic obedience commands. Still working the finer points of leash walking - she sometimes gets way to excited when passing other dogs, but she is responding to treats! When you adopt a pet from Midwest Animal Rescue and Services, your adoption fee covers: Microchip and registration, Core Vaccines including Rabies, Distemper and bordetella, age appropriate heartworm testing or FeLV-FIV testing, sterilization, heartworm/flea-tick prevention and deworming while in foster care. Long Distance Adoptions: Animals who are not fully vaccinated and altered are not eligible for long distance adoption. We require a meet of the pet prior to adoption, which means coming to MARS.
