Description:
Meet Smoke!

Smoke is on the shy side, but very sweet.  He was surrendered to a shelter along with his sibling, Lucy...and no reason was given.   Smoke made the long journey from West Virginia in search of more snow and tater tot hotdish!  So far he LOVES the snow but will likely not get any hotdish from his foster family.

He was not accustomed to city/suburban things or being walked on a leash so he maybe grew up in a rural area perhaps as an outside dog.  He does go to the bathroom when he is let out but he's not 100% housetrained yet.  Smoke is crate-trained and can stay in without accidents.

Smoke has a nose for food and is an expert counter surfer!  His latest prize was a loaf of bread.  He carried it over to his bed but before he could enjoy it, his foster father confiscated it.  Next time he'll have to choose something that doesn't make as much noise.

Smoke steers clear of the older, small (crabby) dog in his foster home.  He has not been exposed to kids yet but he has a gentle, calm, teddy bear demeanor when he's relaxed so kids may be in his future.

His foster family will be working on socializing him more in the days to come.  He is a sweet dog who is coming out of his shell and gradually becoming less skittish.  He's a tail wager and since he has the Aussie short tail, his whole back end wiggles when he's excited!

His sister, Lucy, also came to MN which he's so happy about as she's his best friend.  It would be great if these 2 could get adopted together, however, they may also benefit from being paired with a calm, more experienced dog (or human) who could help build their confidence.

Smokey, as his foster family calls him, is great on leash now and is a joy to walk.  He will bark at other dogs, however, but he's smart and listens to correction fairly well.  With more practice and exposure to urban walking, he will no doubt improve in that aspect.

His new family will have to "puppy proof" their house because he likes to carry around and chew on items such as slippers, remote controls, pens.... ironically, he does not chew up his larger stuffed toys.  His favorite is his bunny.   :)

He has a protective instinct so he alerts to noises and "guards" the house and yard.  For this reason, we do not recommend him for apartment life.

He has the thickest, most beautiful coat and has turned into quite the cuddler with his foster family!  He likes belly rubs and will paw for more!

He's not a high strung dog at all and has been fun to have around!

He learned "sit" in no time flat and is very food motivated - his new family will be so lucky to have such smart dog - the sky's the limit!

When you adopt a pet from Midwest Animal Rescue and Services, your adoption fee covers: Microchip and registration, Core Vaccines including Rabies, Distemper and bordetella, age appropriate heartworm testing or FeLV-FIV testing, sterilization, heartworm/flea-tick prevention and deworming while in foster care.

Long Distance Adoptions: Animals who are not fully vaccinated and altered are not eligible for long distance adoption. We require a meet of the pet prior to adoption, which means coming to MARS.  We do not transport to potential adopters.

How to learn more about a pet: Complete the application (click on the button above) to start our process for adopting or fostering a MARS Pet.

Adoption fees are non-negotiable and can be paid by cashier's check, money order or credit card. We do not accept personal checks.

Post Adoption: Any issues that arise after adoption are the full responsibility of the adopter after the finalization of adoption. We highly recommend Pet Insurance.  Adoption fees are only part of the expense of owning a pet, so we ask you to consider the costs for the life of the pet before adoption. We recommend pet insurance.

Pet Breeds: The pet you are viewing is a rescued pet which is most often from an animal control facility or Shelter partner. The breed(s) listed are our best guess and are in no way guaranteed.

If you choose to DNA test your adopted pet, test results may vary from company to company and our breed guess may not be reflected in those results as it is just that, our best guess without knowing a pet’s full history.
