Meet Jemma:

Good with dogs, cats, walks well on leash, not a big barker, LOVES people

Jemma was brought to a shelter crammed in a wooden box along with 2 other Beagles in the back of a truck.  The owner dumped them saying "they were worth nothing because they wouldn't hunt." Jemma's beginning may have been bad ... but she didn't know that was her lucky day!  She has now come to MARS to find a new home with a family that will love her!

This little girl is ‘pleasingly plump’ when you see her in person and she's oh so cute!  She loves attention from everyone!  She doesn’t appear to have had any leash training, but she does fairly well with a little encouragement.

Jemma is working on potty training and learning the routine at her foster home. She seems to really like being with another dog and will need one in her new home as she does not do well without a doggie companion.

Her foster mom thinks she seems younger than 5 years so it could be that she's had low quality food and has a bit of wear on her teeth from her prior life. Surprisingly, even though she's a Beagle/Bassett mix her foster mom said that she doesn't bark in the house unless she's startled.

Jemma gets along fine with cats.   She is now starting to show her playful side and wants to play with them, but is respectful if they are not interested.

She walks on a leash fine with her nose to the ground the whole way taking in all the wonderful smells along the way.

Her foster is now leaving her in the house free roaming without any issues.

Report from her foster mom:

  • Where is she at with house training at this point? Jemma whines at the back door when she wants/or needs out. There have been no accidents recently. So she has picked it up quickly.

  • Are you using a kennel? If yes, so does she do (barking, whinning etc)? We do not use a kennel.

  • I believe she was good with your cat per an earlier email, is that still the case? She is still very good with the cats.

  • Is she being good with kids - toddler age? Elementary age? She has been good with all ages so far. Such an easy going girl.

  • Would she do well in a home without children or another dog? She needs to have another dog with her - see below

  • Has she learned any commands? Food motivated for training?  We are working on some basic commands. Very food motivated.

  • What are her General likes and dislikes? Likes treats. Still figuring out toys. Squeaky toys seem to scare her a little. Loves to be with you and snuggle.

  • How does she do on leash? Pulls to get out of the yard, but then, nose to the ground with no pulling. Barking dogs don't even distract her.

  • Is she still relatively quiet or is she becoming more or a barker? Still quiet.

  • Would she do well with shared wall living? I would say not likely ... She likes to howl when you get home.

  • Anything else you would like me to share with a potential adopter to help them decide if she's a good match? She is a very easy foster dog. The only thing is when our dog passed she seems to have anxiety now when left alone. She did dot exhibit this until after he left us. She attaches quickly to people, but we are home most of the time with her. A schedule and a dog friend will go a long way with her.

If you are looking for some Bagel love you'll want to give this girl a chance and add her to your family!

*The pet you are viewing is a rescued pet which is most often from an animal control facility and does not come with a pedigree. The breed(s) listed are our best guess and are in no way guaranteed. Sometimes the pets appear to be a particular breed(s) in the pictures we receive from our rescue partners and when they arrive we are surprised to see an entirely different breed(s) in person!  If you choose to DNA test your adopted pet, test results may vary from company to company and our breed guess may not be reflected in those results as it is just that, our best guess. It is with deep longing that we wish there was a breed called "cute" as we believe all of our dogs would fall under this new breed classification!

Completion of an Adoption Application via our website www.midwestanimalrescue.org is the best way to show your interest in an animal and is the first step in our adoption process.

*Animals who are not fully vaccinated and altered are not eligible for long distance adoption.

When you adopt a pet from Midwest Animal Rescue and Services, your adoption fee covers: Microchip and registration, Core Vaccines including Rabies, Distemper and bordetella, age appropriate heartworm testing or FeLV-FIV testing, sterilization, heartworm/flea-tick prevention and deworming while in foster care.

Adoption fees are non-negotiable and can be paid by cashier's check, money order or credit card. We do not accept personal checks.

Any issues that arise after adoption are the full responsibility of the adopter after the finalization of adoption. Adoption fees are only part of the expense of owning a pet, so we ask you to consider the costs for the life of the pet before adoption. We recommend pet insurance.
