There are many factors to consider before adopting a dog. Your lifestlye, personality, financial and housing situations are just a few. If you're considering adopting a dog, you may want to ask yourself a few questions:
• Why do I want a dog?
• Do I have time for a dog?
• Is my living situation stable and suitable for a dog?
• Do I have the means to care for a dog properly?
• Can I commit myself to a dog for the rest of his life?
• Can I cope with the changes a dog will bring to my lifestyle?
• Are others in my life ready to accept a dog into the family?
If you're ready, then it's time to begin the adoption process! Please understand that it is important for us to know that prospective owners feel a real bond and commitment to the animal being considered, but it is also important that the animal fit your lifestyle. Our goal is to match each dog or cat with a home where an ideal bond will occur and both animal AND human will benefit from it!
The first part of the adoption process is submitting an Application for Adoption. Once your application is received, a MARS Adoption Coordinator will review it to determine if the animal you are interested in fits your lifestlye, home environment and energy level. Your application will be approved in conjunction with a telephone interview, reference check and physical home visit.
Of course you will get to meet and spend some time with the dog you are considering and get to see if it is the match we all hope it will be! If it is, then you will welcome a fantastic new companion to your home for the beginning of what we are certain will be a great relationship. Our adoption center offers large meeting rooms to allow you the opportunity to interact with your potential furry companion and space for the resident dog(s) and potential adopted dog to meet.
If at any point in the process we or you find that the dog of your choice is not the perfect match, then we will work with you to find a dog that is more suitable and would make a GREAT addition to your home.
Upon adoption, we require that you sign an adoption agreement and pay the adoption fee. All dogs adopted from MARS are fully vetted (vaccinated, HW tested and spayed/neutered, as appropriate for the age of each dog). All cats are fully vetted and spayed/neutered as well.
This may feel like a long process, but it is important to understand that we need to know that these dogs will never end up unwanted again. Most applicants begin to feel a sense of excitement and anticipation about bringing a new dog home and the care that we take with YOUR new dog makes it a worthwhile and rewarding experience.
Above all, thank you for considering adoption. The dogs and cats that come to MARS wouldn't stand a chance without you!
