Meet Branson!

This adorable boy was left unclaimed at a high kill shelter.  He is the cutest mix and such a friendly little guy!  Branson is good with other dogs and people of all ages.  He is sure to bring joy to any home.

Update from current foster home:

Branson has lots of energy, feeling playful, and eating like a little pig. If it isn't from his bowl, it is from the other dog's or cat's. He tries to play with everyone...including the cats. He plays a bit rough..nipping at ears and necks, but it is clearly play.  Another dog in the foster home puts him in his place, and Branson is just fine with it.  He is not very interested in toys - unless they look like human shoes :-)

It is hard to believe he has only been here a bit over a week.  I don't kennel him anymore as he is very good (as long as shoes in the closet and out of reach). Branson has learned the potty routine just in the first couple of days.  He usually does not signal when he needs to go out, he just starts acting like he is distracted - so we catch that and put him outside.

He knows all our schedules, and anticipates the next event. Fits into the house perfectly. Will sleep in the kennel, but with the door open...he just feels comfortable there. He has tried my bed, curled up with another dog in the house, but then goes to his own place. He likes a good belly rub, but doesn't cuddle up for long...has to be off exploring.

So far, I would have to say this dog is almost perfect. I think he will adapt easily to a family, other pets, etc. Whoever gets him will be really lucky. Branson will probably prefer to not be left home alone all day.

Update 9/17

Branson is being fostered in a home with 2 older dogs and 3 cats. He is a fairly sensitive dog and does best in an environment that is kind and loving. He loves belly rubs and an occasional massage, but he doesn ʼ t sit still for long. He is curious and playful and loves a good romp and vigorous play with the other dogs.

Kids: There are a lot of kids in our neighborhood and Branson just loves them. There is a two year old who runs out and hugs him, and Branson is very gentle with him. The two of them look for each other at every walk time. There are several other very little kids who pet him, and he doesn ʼ t jump up. If too excited during the play, Branson may nibble playfully on hands or ears, so very much puppy-like, it would be best to not allow a very small child rough-house with him too much.

House: Branson does quite well on the leash. When the other dogs are not also on the walk, he is right by my side. He is working on following commands - coming consistently over when called, and sit on command even if a reward is not offered. He kennels well if there is a treat or rawhide incentive. In his current home, he has not been left alone in the kennel for longer than 4 hours. He is house trained. Like with all dogs, it's good to teach him what a routine is in your house so he knows potty time and does not attempt to mark inside.  Branson pretty much sticks to chewing on his toys, so make sure you have plenty of toys for him to entertain with.

Branson is a truly delightful, playful loving little guy and is SO much fun!

Update 10/10
Branson is absolutely w onderful with other dogs. Plays with great energy. He doesn't NEED another dog, but he would benefit from being with another playful dog. He expends a lot of energy in play. Branson will chase the cats if he is bored...he is clearly wanting to play with them, not hurt them.

Branson loves children and they love him. His roughhousing may be too much for a toddler, so it would be best if his adoptive family had school-age or older children.

When his foster family is out or cannot keep an eye on Branson for long time, Branson is crated. He likes to chew, so being in a crate keeps this guy out of trouble.  He needs an incentive to go into the crate, but does not complain or bark in the crate.  Branson will whine if there is exciting stuff going on and he feels left out, but he is really quite good in the crate.

While Branson is OK with no accidents for 9 hours at night, during the day he should not be left alone for too long without being exercised. It would be best if there was a family member who came home in the afternoon and let Branson burn off a bit of energy outside. He also needs to go for a walk as part of his toilet routine (vs. relieving himself while being tied out).  Exercise is important for Branson so he burns off his energy and doesn't get into mischief. A house with a fenced-in yard or a person or family who like long walks would be ideal for Branson.

Branson i s quite good on the leash, especially when he is the only dog being walked. When there are 3 dogs walking at the same time, he wanders a bit. He needs more practice on basic commands. He will sit for a treat, but he won't "down" or "leave it". He will usually come when called.

Branson very seldom barks. He whines instead. He doesn't bark when the door bell rings.

If Branson is bored, he relieves his boredom with chewing.  H
e will go for squeaky toys if they are convenient. He has never chewed any furniture, but he has destroyed several pencils, and has reached for some household items but was caught before he could put his teeth to them.

Playing with his foster canine sibling is Branson's #1 favorite thing to do.  Chewing on skinny rawhides and squeaky toys come close second.. He does not retrieve a ball, but he will often chase one.

As far as Beagles go, Branson is VERY interesting. He is almost comical in what he thinks to do. (He loves to sit on the top of the cat tree, for example, to survey the outside.) He is very sweet, and will cuddle a bit, but doesn't sit still for long. He is just so cute he can be forgiven for anything. He is fun to walk, and engages everyone he and his foster family passes. Everyone in the neighborhood knows him and stops to talk. Kids run out of their houses just to pet him. He is perfect in many, many ways, but needs a disciplined owner and supervision. Branson needs gentleness and consistency. He cowers if someone yells at him or corrects him too strongly. He does really well with predictable routine. He is not shy but is also not aggressive. He is a great dog, but takes a lot of attention .

*The pet you are viewing is a rescued pet which is most often from an animal control facility and does not come with a pedigree. The breed(s) listed are our best guess and are in no way guaranteed. Sometimes the pets appear to be a particular breed(s) in the pictures we receive from our rescue partners and when they arrive we are surprised to see an entirely different breed(s) in person!  If you choose to DNA test your adopted pet, test results may vary from company to company and our breed guess may not be reflected in those results as it is just that, our best guess. It is with deep longing that we wish there was a breed called "cute" as we believe all of our dogs would fall under this new breed classification!

Completion of an Adoption Application via our website www.midwestanimalrescue.org is the best way to show your interest in an animal and is the first step in our adoption process.

*Animals who are not fully vaccinated and altered are not eligible for long distance adoption.

When you adopt a pet from Midwest Animal Rescue and Services, your adoption fee covers: Microchip and registration, Core Vaccines including Rabies, Distemper and bordetella, age appropriate heartworm testing or FeLV-FIV testing, sterilization, heartworm/flea-tick prevention and deworming while in foster care.

Adoption fees are non-negotiable and can be paid by cashier's check, money order or credit card. We do not accept personal checks.

Any issues that arise after adoption are the full responsibility of the adopter after the finalization of adoption. Adoption fees are only part of the expense of owning a pet, so we ask you to consider the costs for the life of the pet before adoption. We recommend pet insurance.
