Description:

Meet Apollo,

Apollo's family simply took him to the pound & abandoned him there, all groomed & smelling nice. He probably thought he was being boarded (in that horrible place)...then the last day came & we simply couldn't let the dog with a heart shaped symbol on his head die.

He is totally house-trained, lovable with cats, dogs & would be fine with older kids too. He loves to walk...he is very smart. We guess a forty-five lb golden mix with a last chance at a good life.

Apollo has settled in to his foster home nicely. However, the vet has notified us that Apollo may have been struck by a car, and has an old injury in the back half of his body. More info to come. Apollo is now searching for his forever home. Will that be with you?

*Note* Apollo has an old hip injury, most likely caused by being hit by a car when he was younger. It did not heal correctly and has resulted in hip displaysia and it's a good possibility he may need hip surgery later in his life. It's recommended that he be placed on daily joint medication (ie. Cosequin). Many dogs with hip displaysia or arthritis will eventually need to have medication such as Rimadyl to help with pain management as they age.

Update from foster home:

A fenced backyard is required for Apollo as he loves to chase squirrels and bunnies. He will take off with the determination of a Olympic track star to catch them with no regard to what's going on around him ie. Cars. In addition to that he could sit outside for hours. I thought maybe that would change once it snowed but it hasn't. He will sit outside in the snow for longer periods of time than I am comfortable with!

His name should have been rooster-he is up every single day like clock work between 6:00-6:15 ready for breakfast and then we will sit by the door and whine until you take him for a walk. He loves his walks and is pretty good on a leash. He has gotten better about the bunnies and squirrels on the leash; if you tell him to "leave it" he won't bolt for it...he just tries to stare it down.

He can also be very skittish on a leash. Big trucks like garbage trucks or buses make him very frightened. We have actually had to move way off the sidewalk if a bus is coming...that is getting better as well.

He does love to sleep on the furniture. Sorry.

He will let you brush him now - not so much at first but he has come a long way. He will sit very nice for about 10 minutes or so - then he is done.

He loves to play with other dogs - he is super playful so a home with another dog would be good. Doesn't bother my cat in the slightest bit (but he does like to eat all her cat food). Loves loves loves my boys. Only barks at squirrels. He is super smart - has learned sit -is working on stay and doing pretty good. Knows come but he has selective hearing with this one. :) He is a total lover and would be a lap dog if you let him. He is one of those dogs that when you hug him...he really does hug you back.

When you adopt a pet from Midwest Animal Rescue and Services, your adoption fee covers: Microchip and registration, Core Vaccines including Rabies, Distemper and bordetella, age appropriate heartworm testing or FeLV-FIV testing, sterilization, heartworm/flea-tick prevention and deworming while in foster care.

Long Distance Adoptions: Animals who are not fully vaccinated and altered are not eligible for long distance adoption. We require a meet of the pet prior to adoption, which means coming to MARS.  We do not transport to potential adopters.

How to learn more about a pet: Complete the application (click on the button above) to start our process for adopting or fostering a MARS Pet.

Adoption fees are non-negotiable and can be paid by cashier's check, money order or credit card. We do not accept personal checks.

Post Adoption: Any issues that arise after adoption are the full responsibility of the adopter after the finalization of adoption. We highly recommend Pet Insurance.  Adoption fees are only part of the expense of owning a pet, so we ask you to consider the costs for the life of the pet before adoption. We recommend pet insurance.

Pet Breeds: The pet you are viewing is a rescued pet which is most often from an animal control facility or Shelter partner. The breed(s) listed are our best guess and are in no way guaranteed.

If you choose to DNA test your adopted pet, test results may vary from company to company and our breed guess may not be reflected in those results as it is just that, our best guess without knowing a pet’s full history.
