Description:

Appollo is a survivor and a very strong personality.

After being abandoned by his family, he had a rough start as a foster cat, too. He has feline herpes, which makes him more susceptible to illness under stress, and he developed an upper respiratory infection and a fever of 105(!). In his first 3 weeks at my house, he put up with a cold bath (yikes!), 7 vet visits, 8 pills, 14 swallows of liquid antibiotics, 4 blood draws, and 6 nights of basement couch cuddling while I tried to love him back to health.

He's a very forgiving cat, and very food motivated! Twice a day for 10 days, I would rattle his treat bag, and he would come running, knowing full well that the price of getting a treat was to lay still while I poked him with a needle for his subcutaneous fluid. Even though he does not like being confined, he would just lay still next to me while the fluid dripped. Did I mention he's very forgiving? And a survivor?

Once he got his energy back, it took him a while to warm up to me again after all that loving "mistreatment", but once he did, he is a lot of fun! He's a ball of wriggling energy and gets bored easily; he will pick through the toy box to find his favorite mice.  He is an excellent fetch player! He wakes me up by dropping a stuffed mouse on my bed, and if I fling it down the hall he'll go charging after it and bring it back and drop it on the foot of the bed again.

He is more of a "friend cat" than a "cuddly cat". He likes to chase me and my resident cat around the house and he rarely lets me out of his sight for very long. When he gets tired, then he will curl up next to me and let me pet him. He loves cheek and ear rubs.

He's got perfect litter box behavior and we have worked on  his manners--he was a bit bitey for a while, especially if I touched his tummy. He now knows that when I say "oooowww" he is too rough and he'll back off immediately. He has front claws and likes to scratch, so  I used Feliscratch to attract him to the scratching post. I'd recommend doing that or cat nip to show him where scratching is appropriate. He's smart; once he figured out the scratching post was his, he has not scratched furniture at all.

He does  not like being picked up, but he will tolerate it briefly now, and I have even managed to trim his claws. He gets treats for that as well!

He remains a needy cat and should go to a low-stress environment due to his health. He does not deal well with lots of people or loud noise; I think he would adapt well to kids, but probably not grabby ones.  He gets wet food twice a day, and dry food in between. He is ok with my resident cat, but  he instigates a lot of wrestling and aggressive play. I would not put him with an elderly cat who can't handle roughness.

Overall, he has rebounded amazingly well from his illness! He is a ton of fun and would be a great addition to a home who's willing to take on the responsibility and take good care of him.

His adoption fee covers boosters, rabies, FIV/ Feluek test, microchip and neuter.

When you adopt a pet from Midwest Animal Rescue and Services, your adoption fee covers: Microchip and registration, Core Vaccines including Rabies, Distemper and bordetella, age appropriate heartworm testing or FeLV-FIV testing, sterilization, heartworm/flea-tick prevention and deworming while in foster care.

Long Distance Adoptions: Animals who are not fully vaccinated and altered are not eligible for long distance adoption. We require a meet of the pet prior to adoption, which means coming to MARS.  We do not transport to potential adopters.

How to learn more about a pet: Complete the application (click on the button above) to start our process for adopting or fostering a MARS Pet.

Adoption fees are non-negotiable and can be paid by cashier's check, money order or credit card. We do not accept personal checks.

Post Adoption: Any issues that arise after adoption are the full responsibility of the adopter after the finalization of adoption. We highly recommend Pet Insurance.  Adoption fees are only part of the expense of owning a pet, so we ask you to consider the costs for the life of the pet before adoption. We recommend pet insurance.

Pet Breeds: The pet you are viewing is a rescued pet which is most often from an animal control facility or Shelter partner. The breed(s) listed are our best guess and are in no way guaranteed.

If you choose to DNA test your adopted pet, test results may vary from company to company and our breed guess may not be reflected in those results as it is just that, our best guess without knowing a pet’s full history.
