Meet Hollis!

Hollis is a young male black lab mix that was found as a local stray and left unclaimed at the shelter.

Hollis came in with a bad skin condition and hair loss, but he is healing up nicely, and his inner George Clooney has emerged. He is charming, debonair, and he melts your heart with his big serious brown eyes. He also loves to snuggle and be hugged by his person/people.  He's got a good sense of humor and that joy in living that makes Labradors such wonderful companions.

He has about as much energy as you would imagine a 2-3 year old Labrador has. He has had a blast playing with a 16 year old chihuaua on up to a four year old pitbull/Lab mix. He has not been destructive at his foster home, but he has enjoyed chasing the chickens a little too much. He will need you to give him adequate exercise in his new permanent home.  He loves to play fetch with balls, sticks, plastic bottles, etc, and he loves to swim. He probably would love to go hunting. A good beef marrow bone will keep him busy for hours.

Once he realizes you are settle in to watch TV, or hang out, he lays down and relaxes, preferably in the same room so he can make sure you don't sneak out to have fun without him.  He sleeps in a crate a night has free reign of the house for a few hours while his foster family is at work.  He doesn't bark when locked up unless the other dogs bark.

Be advised, he is quite tall when he stands up, and believes kitchen counters are like grocery stores for dogs.

He gets along with little dogs, big dogs, and cats. If anything, he is a little submissive around other dogs.  He has a strong prey drive, and chases things like chickens and horses when they run from him, but so far doesn't seem too interested in catching and eating them. He hasn't been around kids in his new foster home, so we don't know how he does with kids, but he doesn't seem interested in bullying anyone.

Someone has taken the time to teach Hollis some basic commands, he sits, lays down, stays, and shakes hands.  He even comes when you call him most of the time, or at least makes eye contact in a charming way. He's going to need work on heeling by your side on a slack leash as he pulls pretty hard now.  He will be a wonderful lifelong companion to someone willing to invest the time and consistency in training him now as a young dog.

Though we are not sure yet, based on his skin condition when he arrived at MARS, he might have allergies, so his new family needs to understand this entails some cost and attention to keep him looking and feeling his best.

When you adopt a pet from Midwest Animal Rescue and Services, your adoption fee covers: Microchip and registration, Core Vaccines including Rabies, Distemper and bordetella, age appropriate heartworm testing or FeLV-FIV testing, sterilization, heartworm/flea-tick prevention and deworming while in foster care.

Long Distance Adoptions: Animals who are not fully vaccinated and altered are not eligible for long distance adoption. We require a meet of the pet prior to adoption, which means coming to MARS.  We do not transport to potential adopters.

How to learn more about a pet: Complete the application (click on the button above) to start our process for adopting or fostering a MARS Pet.

Adoption fees are non-negotiable and can be paid by cashier's check, money order or credit card. We do not accept personal checks.

Post Adoption: Any issues that arise after adoption are the full responsibility of the adopter after the finalization of adoption. We highly recommend Pet Insurance.  Adoption fees are only part of the expense of owning a pet, so we ask you to consider the costs for the life of the pet before adoption. We recommend pet insurance.

Pet Breeds: The pet you are viewing is a rescued pet which is most often from an animal control facility or Shelter partner. The breed(s) listed are our best guess and are in no way guaranteed.

If you choose to DNA test your adopted pet, test results may vary from company to company and our breed guess may not be reflected in those results as it is just that, our best guess without knowing a pet’s full history.
