Description:

Meet Holden, a.k.a. Sunny!

Sunny is a Terrier mix with an adorable fur collar, fancy. He looks a bit like Tramp from Lady and the Tramp. His hair is coarse and low-shedding.

Sunny tested positive for heartworm and will be treated by MARS so he can live a long, happy and healthy life. Heartworm is not contagious to humans or dogs. The treatment includes several shots and Sunny will be as good as new.  He will then need to be on heartworm preventative just like all other dogs in our state.

We renamed him Sunny because somewhere behind his initially shy demeanor there is a sunny personality that will shine through soon. His foster mom thinks he may have been a stray for a while. When Sunny arrived to the rescue, he was so scared, he didn't want to leave his kennel. But, two days later, he came out of the kennel by himself, tail wagging, and he has been making huge progress during his first week here. He has learned to go up and down the stairs, figured out how comfortable a dog bed is, and seems to be perfectly housetrained. Sunny has great house manners. Sunny is very good on the leash and trots next to you like a Tennessee Walker, so cool. He really enjoys his walks. We expect that playing with toys will be what Sunny will master next. Right now, he's just looking at other dogs in the house chasing the squeaky toys and wondering why they're having such a great time.

Sunny is such a very sweet, gentle boy. He follows his foster mom around the house and loves when the 4-year-old little girl pets him. That little girl is dog-savvy and knows to give him space and time to develop confidence and get completely comfortable. He is gaining confidence every day - and it helps to have a tiny resident dog around to show him the ropes. He is kenneled during the day while his family is at work, and while not a fan of it, Sunny quietly whimpers and then settles down. At night, he earned himself human bed privileges and sleeps without a peep all night. He is interested in what his foster folks are doing, but is also content to snooze nearby without demanding attention. Sunny enjoys the sound of kibble being poured into a bowl and has a good appetite. He takes treats very gently.

Sunny would make a great companion in a calm household without too much activity. He can't wait to meet his forever person or family!

When you adopt a pet from Midwest Animal Rescue and Services, your adoption fee covers: Microchip and registration, Core Vaccines including Rabies, Distemper and bordetella, age appropriate heartworm testing or FeLV-FIV testing, sterilization, heartworm/flea-tick prevention and deworming while in foster care.

Long Distance Adoptions: Animals who are not fully vaccinated and altered are not eligible for long distance adoption. We require a meet of the pet prior to adoption, which means coming to MARS.  We do not transport to potential adopters.

How to learn more about a pet: Complete the application (click on the button above) to start our process for adopting or fostering a MARS Pet.

Adoption fees are non-negotiable and can be paid by cashier's check, money order or credit card. We do not accept personal checks.

Post Adoption: Any issues that arise after adoption are the full responsibility of the adopter after the finalization of adoption. We highly recommend Pet Insurance.  Adoption fees are only part of the expense of owning a pet, so we ask you to consider the costs for the life of the pet before adoption. We recommend pet insurance.

Pet Breeds: The pet you are viewing is a rescued pet which is most often from an animal control facility or Shelter partner. The breed(s) listed are our best guess and are in no way guaranteed.

If you choose to DNA test your adopted pet, test results may vary from company to company and our breed guess may not be reflected in those results as it is just that, our best guess without knowing a pet’s full history.
