What's the Process to Adopt?

Our adoption process is designed to be straightforward and supportive. Below is an overview of the typical steps involved when adopting a dog or cat from MARS.

Each step is designed to support both pets and adopters throughout the process.

1. Browse Available Pets

Explore our adoptable dogs and cats available through Midwest Animal Rescue & Services in Minnesota to find a pet that feels like a good fit for your home, lifestyle, and experience level.


Tip: If you’re not seeing the right match today, check back often—new pets arrive regularly.

2. Submit an Adoption Application

Once you’ve found a pet you’re interested in, complete our adoption application.

Applications help our team learn more about you and ensure we’re making thoughtful matches.

3. Application Review

Our adoption team reviews applications in the order received. Steps through the approval process may include:

  • A review of your application

  • Follow-up questions if needed

  • Reference or vet checks, when applicable

We appreciate your patience—our team is often juggling many animals and applications, and we're grateful for your understanding.

4. Meet & Greet

If your application is approved, we’ll coordinate a meet-and-greet.

 This may take place at:

  • Our Adoption Center in Brooklyn Park, MN

  • An event/partner Location

  • Or during an adoption vent

Not every meet-and-greet leads to adoption, and that’s okay—we’re focused on the right match.

5. Adoption Finalization

If it’s a match, we’ll walk you through next steps, including:

  • Adoption contract

  • Adoption fee

  • Post-Adoption Support

Then it’s time to welcome your new family member home 💙
