Surrendering Your Pet

We know this can be a hard decision — we’re here to help you navigate next steps.

Thank you for reaching out to Midwest Animal Rescue (MARS). We understand you may be in a position where you need to rehome your pet.

Please note: MARS is 100% foster-based. We are not a shelter and cannot provide immediate placement. We also cannot guarantee we’re able to take a pet, as we must have a foster home available.

Frequently Asked Questions

I adopted my pet from MARS. What should I do?
If you adopted your pet from Midwest Animal Rescue (MARS), please complete our surrender form to begin the return process. Our team will review your submission and follow up as soon as possible.
Placement depends on foster home availability.

My pet was not adopted from MARS. Can you still help? We have very limited availability to accept pets that were not adopted from MARS. Because we are a 100% foster-based rescue, we can only take in animals when an appropriate foster home is available.
If you submit a request, our team will review it and let you know if we are able to help or if alternative resources may be a better fit.

Are there pets MARS cannot accept? Yes. At this time, MARS is unable to accept non-MARS animals that: * Have a history of human aggression * Have multiple bite incidents involving people or other animals * Have been declared Dangerous or Potentially Dangerous by a county * Are coming from states outside of Minnesota
If your pet was adopted from MARS, please continue with the surrender process and submit the appropriate form. Our team will review your submission and be in touch to discuss next steps.
If your situation falls into one of the categories above and your pet was not adopted from MARS, we encourage you to contact your local animal control agency or a nearby shelter for guidance.

I found a stray animal. Can I bring them to MARS? No. MARS cannot accept stray animals. If you have found a stray pet, please contact the animal control agency for the city or county where the animal was found. They are best equipped to help reunite lost pets with their owners.

I’ve lost my pet. What should I do? We’re so sorry your pet is missing. Here are a few steps that may help: * Post flyers in your neighborhood with a photo and contact information * Ask neighbors to check garages, sheds, and under decks * Contact your pet’s microchip company to ensure your information is up to date * Post on local Facebook groups, Nextdoor, PawBoost, and Petco Love Lost * Place familiar items (like bedding or a litter box) outside near where your pet was last seen If you need additional help, professional lost pet recovery services may also be an option.
